Studies carried out in 1981 by Sternberg and Hamilton demonstrated that the bacteriophage'P1'had a unique site specific recombination system.
2.
Both reactions are catalysed by the same active site and occur via transesterification, without a covalent protein-DNA intermediate, in contrast to reactions catalysed by Ser and Tyr recombinases ( see site specific recombination ).
3.
The Cre-lox system is used as a genetic tool to control site specific recombination events in genomic DNA . This system has allowed researchers to manipulate a variety of genetically modified organisms to control gene expression, delete undesired DNA sequences and modify chromosome architecture.
